In my short lifetime I have seen some huge shifts in what is considered beautiful. Let’s face it, us humans are creatures of extremes.
I have watched the transition through the 80s and 90s of the trend to being extremely thin and then a push back in the 2000s to a more rounded shape that has more of an athletic build.
Then the 2010s to a bubble butt and larger breasts look which still has popularity.
But recently there is a real push to make plus, plus size models the look to have and whilst beauty is in the eye of the beholder it’s a dangerous look.
Why?
Being extremely thin is not healthy but neither is being extremely obese. We have to be real careful which model we promote because magazines and TV really need to be responsible for promoting health as well as beauty.
Obesity is one of the biggest drivers of poor health from inflammation and this leads to all sorts of health condition such as; type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cancer and reproductive diseases.
As a trainer I am always trying to promote health. Everything from a healthy body weight, healthy lifestyle and a healthy self image. The last being of prime importance.
I am old enough to remember the ‘Life Be In It’ campaigns and the host of different campaigns that promoted a healthy weight and healthy lifestyle.
I am also very saddened to see now that obesity seems to be promoted as healthy body image. I don’t think it’s right to accept poor health as a healthy body image. Not when it also affects physical health.
I have had many people argue that I am a bodybuilder and that taking all those steroids is not healthy and that competing is not healthy.
Firstly, I have never taken steroids and yes bodybuilding competition at its extremes is quite unhealthy. Both physically and mentally. But only at its extremes.
But, having some muscle is healthy and following a less extreme bodybuilding style diet is proving to be very healthy.
Those are the principles of bodybuilding I will promote because weight training and healthy eating. Including a diet moderately high in protein and high in vegetables and fruit has been proven to be the best way to eat.
Our government and health agencies should be promoting proper nutrition and in the last three years we have lost our way.
Our health agencies keep repeating get tested and get vaccinated. But not one mention of how to improve your health and your immune health.
Not once.
Remember I am not saying that big is not beautiful because beauty is individual. I am saying it’s not healthy and I am promoting health.
